Would you like the opportunity to show off your research? Gain valuable experience while presenting your work in a supportive environment while demonstrating your excellent scholarship to OU’s academic community. Join us for the annual Student Research and Performance Day 2010. You could receive a cash award for your presentation!
Sponsored by the Graduate College and Graduate Student Senate, the Student Research and Performance Day will be held on Friday, March 26 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the National Weather Center located on OU South Campus, David L. Boren Boulevard (Google map of the National Weather Center).
Graduate students have the opportunity to present their current research, paintings, photography, sculpture, video etc. through the use of portfolios, posters, slide and video shows.
Students are asked to setup their displays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for a faculty/community panel that will judge the presentations. The best presentation in each category will receive a cash award. The competition categories will be determined based on the participants' fields of study. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 30 via email.
Guidelines for participation:
The Graduate College recommends that each presentation consist of one 30" by 40" poster or portfolio of work. Each participant should select the material to include on the poster or portfolio, and the format in which to present it. Some examples include essays, equations, photographs, or drawings.
You may enhance your poster presentation using a slide or a video show using your personal laptop. If you are a Fine Arts student, this may be especially helpful to describe your research with visual performances. Don't forget to bring the CD, DVD or a flash drive of your recordings if they are not stored on your laptop.
The Graduate College will provide easels to display each poster/portfolio. Students must have posters mounted on a sturdy board for display. The mat boards may be purchased at office supply stores. Please note that we will not be providing the mat boards.
Complete the Poster Session Registration form (see below) and submit it along with your 100-120 word abstract to the Graduate College no later than Monday, March 1, 2010. The project or research need not be completed at the time of the presentation.
On the presentation day, between 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. you need to set up your display in the National Weather Center. You have to be physically present from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the NWC while the faculty/community panel assesses the displays. The judges or the visitors might have questions regarding your research and you need to be ready to address them.
Tips for Poster Presentations:
Pages can be made using a word processor or presentation software. Use a large font (at least 36 point) for the poster title and your name so that viewers can easily identify the title and author. Also use a relatively large font for the content so the reader is able to read your poster from a few feet away.
Use a good quality mat board. Select a color that will enhance the overall presentation of your material. On the mat board you can attach other sheets of paper that describe your project.
Content: Keep text to the bare essentials and stick to the main ideas that you want to convey. If the readers would like more detail, they will ask you.
Visual Aids: Use graphs and pictures to make your poster visually appealing. Make effective use of contrast and color.
Adhesive: Double-stick tape or spray glue works best. Wet glue can make your paper wrinkle and stick glue may not work well in humid weather conditions.
If You Are Preparing a Slide or Video Presentation...
The video and/or slide show, limit the video presentation to 5 minutes.
Burn the video/slide show on a CD/DVD or save it on the flash drive.
If you have questions about the event and participation please contact Diana Beal, dbeal@ou.edu or phone 325-7715.
