Formerly Graduate Student Research & Creativity Endeavors/Poster Session

We would like to thank all those who have registered to participate in the Research and Performance Day. We have received more than 70 submissions from over 25 departments.

Sponsored by the Graduate College, Honors College, K20 Center, and Graduate Student Senate, the Student Research and Performance Day will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the National Weather Center located on OU South Campus, David L. Boren Boulevard (Google map of the National Weather Center).

Graduate students have the opportunity to present their current research, paintings, photography, sculpture, video etc. through the use of portfolios, posters and slide and video shows. Graduate Students from all areas are welcome to participate and to describe their current research using a poster/portfolio presentation.

Students are asked to setup their displays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for a faculty/community panel that will judge the presentations. The best presentation in each category will receive a cash award. The competition categories will be determined based on the participants' fields of study.

Guidelines for participation:

  1. On the presentation day, between 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. you need to set up your display in the National Weather Center. You have to be physically present from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the NWC while the faculty/community panel assesses the displays. The judges or the visitors might have questions regarding your research and you need to be ready to address them.

  2. The Graduate College recommends that each presentation consist of one 30" by 40" poster or portfolio of work. Each participant should select the material to include on the poster or portfolio, and the format in which to present it. Some examples include essays, equations, photographs, or drawings.

  3. You may present your research/performance using a slide or the video show enhancing your poster presentation. If you are a Fine Arts student, this may be especially helpful to describe your research with visual performances. Screen projectors will be available for you to connect to your laptop. Don't forget to bring the CD, DVD or a flash drive of your recordings if they are not stored on your laptop.

  4. The Graduate College will provide easels to display each poster/portfolio. Students must have posters mounted on a sturdy board for display. Please note that we will not be providing the mat boards.

  5. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the event. Beverages and lunch items (pasta, chicken fillet, etc) may be purchased at the Flying Cow Restaurant located inside the National Weather Center.
  6. The participants will be notified of the results of the competition on Monday 31, 2008 via email.
  7. An awards lunch honoring the winners will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 in the Heritage room of the OMU 11:30 a.m-1:00 p.m.

Tips for Poster Presentations:

  1. Pages can be made using a word processor or presentation software. Use a large font (at least 36 point) for the poster title and your name so that viewers can easily identify the title and author. Also use a relatively large font for the content so the reader is able to read your poster from a few feet away.

  2. Use a good quality mat board (it will cost you about $5.00). Select a color that will enhance the overall presentation of your material. On the mat board you can attach other sheets of paper that describe your project.

  3. Content: Keep text to the bare essentials and stick to the main ideas that you want to convey. If the readers would like more detail, they will ask you.

  4. Visual Aids: Use graphs and pictures to make your poster visually appealing. Make effective use of contrast and color.

  5. Adhesive: Double-stick tape or spray glue works best. Wet glue can make your paper wrinkle and stick glue may not work well in humid weather conditions.

If You Are Preparing a Slide or Video Presentation...

  1. The video and/or slide show, limit the video presentation to 5-10 minutes.

  2. Burn the video/slide show on a CD/DVD or save it on the flash drive.
