Unclassified Students
Unclassified Students are those who wish to take graduate courses and (1) are not seeking a graduate degree; or (2) have not yet chosen an academic field of study. Please meet with the Graduate Liaison of the department or departments in which you plan to study prior to completing the application.

An applicant may be admitted to the Graduate College in unclassified status if the applicant:

  1. has earned a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent AND
  2. has earned at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA)
  • through the semester in which the last 60 credit hours of letter-graded undergraduate bachelor’s degree coursework occurred at an accredited college or university OR
  • over a minimum of 12 hours of letter-graded graduate work from an accredited college or university.

Unclassified students

  1. Are not candidates for a degree
  2. Are not assured future admission to a degree program.
  3. Are not eligible for financial aid
  4. Are limited to a maximum of 12 hours
Please review the Graduate College Bulletin for information regarding the limitations and requirements of the Unclassified Student status.

As an unclassified student, you should become a graduate-degree-seeking student before completing 12 graduate credit hours (see Conditions and Limitations Statement).  Two tasks are required.  First, contact the academic unit of interest and apply directly to the graduate program. Second, complete and submit a Request for Change of Major form online; it will be submitted to the Graduate College for processing.

You may not request to change to a degree-seeking major code in your first semester as an unclassified student.

Requests for changes of major are not processed after the 13th week of the semester (sixth week of the summer session) until the Graduate College receives student grades for that semester.
