The Alice Mary Robertson award was established to honor the memory of Alice Mary Robertson, Oklahoma's first female representative in the United States Congress. The purpose of the award is to stimulate an interest among graduate students in the preservation and use of archival material for the study and interpretation of the contributions made by women to the culture and progress of Oklahoma as well as to awaken the public to a greater appreciation of these contributions. The Alice Mary Robertson Award is a one-time award to a graduate student whose scholarly or creative activity enhances the appreciation of these contributions. Up to three awards of $1,000 will be made annually. A committee will select the recipients during the spring semester, based on an evaluation of the completed research or creative activity.
The Award
$1,000 award to recognize scholarly or creative activity enhancing the appreciation of the contributions made by women to the culture and progress of Oklahoma.
Eligibility Criteria
Any graduate student currently enrolled at the University of Oklahoma or Tulsa campuses may submit an application for this award.
To qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must:
1. be a graduate student at the University of Oklahoma
2. carry at least a 3.5 grade point average in all coursework for the degree
3. have completed nine hours of course work
4. be recommended for the award by the professors with whom coursework has been completed
5. the endorsement and support of the graduate liaison or department chair
Application Process
Application materials are due to the Women's Studies Program by March 1, 2009. Application packet must include:
1. A copy of the student's graduate transcript
2. A current copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae
3. A copy of the student's research project. This may include, but is not limited to, research papers, creative writing, visual and performing arts, etc. These may be accompanied by a statement prepared by the applicant describing the significance of the submission for enhancing the appreciation of the contributions made by the women to the culture and progress of Oklahoma. The statement must be readable by an interdisciplinary audience.
4. Reference letters prepared by two professors with whom the applicant has completed coursework. These letters should speak to the significance of the project for enhancing the appreciation of the contributions made by women to the culture and progress of Oklahoma.
5. An endorsement signature of the applicant's graduate liaison or department chair.
Selection Process
A committee selected from members of the Women's Studies faculty will review the applications immediately following the deadline and recommend recipients to the director of the Women's Studies Program. The recipient will be notified by April 1 and will be included in the Women's Studies Program student recognition and awards ceremony held annually.
