Qualified Graduate Appointment

  • Graduate Student (College 06)
  • 0.50 FTE Appointment (or multiple appointments that total 0.50 FTE*) through an academic department**
  • Effective December 31, 2008 the Qualified Graduate Assistant tuition waiver will only apply to existing awards, pending proposals, and to new proposals and subsequent awards  that allow recovery of the tuition waiver (currently via the 15%  charge on the GA stipend).  Graduate Assistants appointed to grants that do not allow recovery of tuition waiver from the grant will NOT be eligible for the Qualified Graduate Assistant tuition waiver.  For these grants, PI’s are urged to adjust the Graduate Assistant stipend to reflect the student’s need to pay tuition.
  • Full Semester Appointment - from the first day of class to the last day of final exams.
  • Enrolled in 6 hours (during the fall and spring semester(s) of the appointment)
  • Standard GA appointments are 0.50 FTE. The Graduate College does not encourage graduate students to work more than 20 hours per week. 0.99 FTE appointments are essentially full-time positions and are not conducive to academic progress and timely degree completion. Therefore, the Graduate College will no longer approve appointments over 0.75 FTE. Any appointments over 0.50 FTE must be approved by the Graduate College. Exceptions for 0.50 -0.75 FTE appointments may be obtained through the Graduate College Assistant Dean.
  • Job Title:
    • Graduate Research Assistant (qualified) - Code 1777
    • Graduate Teaching Assistant (qualified) - Code 1778

The Qualified Graduate Assistant tuition waiver program is designed to provide tuition support to graduate students whose graduate assistantship is relevant and an integral part of their graduate education experience.  The basic model for this is a full-semester 0.5FTE appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant or Graduate Research Assistant within an academic department or related research unit.  Students whose appointment do not meet these criteria are not automatically eligible for a tuition waiver, and will be considered as follows:

* If a student has multiple appointments totaling 0.50 FTE, then each appointment must also meet all other eligibility criteria (i.e., appointment length and job title) in order for the student to qualify for this tuition waiver.

** If the student has an appointment with a non-academic department, has multiple appointments that are not ALL within academic departments, the student is not automatically eligible for this tuition waiver. In these cases, the appointing departments or unit may request a tuition waiver as described below.

***If the student is appointed in non academic department, the appointing department petitions the Graduate College Dean stating the:

  • Student’s Name
  • ID number
  • Student job title
  • Student’s degree program
  • A brief description of responsibilities and how they relate to the student’s degree program
  • The Graduate Dean will review the petition, and if it is approved, adds the student’s name to the list of eligible Graduate Assistants.

****If the student is appointed in non-academic department and is paid from a research grant (125 account) that is providing a portion of the tuition remission, then the student is eligible for the Qualified Graduate Assistant Tuition Waiver.
